An independent biking experience over private farmland close to Mt Lyford giving you the best North Canterbury has to offer. This high country station has got it all, great scenery, good and uncrowded tracks and fantastic photo opportunities. Breathe in the clean mountain air and be amazed by the changing panoramic views around each corner of the track. This backcountry is just waiting to be explored !

You will …

– experience a quiet and uncrowded private trail; this track is normally inaccessible to the public

– have amazing views of the Kaikoura Ranges and high country

– need moderate to good fitness; these are intermediate and advanced cycle tracks

– need to bring your own bike

– receive a cycle map when booking

The trail is located in the high country and therefore exposed to all types of weather. In summer it can be very hot with little shade and in shoulder season the ground could be covered in snow or wet. We only allow access subject to weather and farm activities.

GRADE:  intermediate to advanced; mainly uphill and downhill stretches, not much flat.
RIDE TIME: 2 – 6 hrs
DISTANCE: 18+  kms (depending on chosen tracks)
AVAILABLE: SUMMER SEASON: November – April
SHOULDER SEASON: May/June (subject to weather)

Track description

Start to Main Saddle 5 km (one way) This ride starts from the parking area along the main road and gently sidles down to the river. Cross the bridge and follow the track in an easy climb to the woolshed (no access). The farm track steadily climbs on from here to the main saddle. You will have fantastic views over the Kaikoura Ranges here, all the way from Mt Lyford down to Kaikoura.

Main Saddle to Historic huts 4km (one way). From the saddle, it is a steady downhill to the turn off to the advanced track. If you prefer to stick to the intermediate track choose to continue down to the Historic Huts (no access)

Forestry Block 2x no exit tracks – 6 km – 15 km. Time and distance is up to you. It is a one way so you have to cycle the same track out. Make sure you have enough energy left to cycle back to the main saddle.
